How to build a calm bedtime routine for a child with autism

A predictable, low-stimulation wind-down is one of the most effective, evidence-backed ways to help an autistic child settle. Here's a simple routine you can actually keep. 🔊 Reading aloud…

Why routine helps so much

Sleep difficulties affect a large majority of autistic children — research reports 50–80% of parents report sleep problems — and a consistent bedtime routine is repeatedly identified as one of the most effective, parent-led supports. The goal isn't a perfect routine; it's a predictable one. Same steps, same order, most nights.

1. Keep the same time and the same order

Start the routine at roughly the same time each night, and run the same steps in the same sequence — bath, teeth, pyjamas, story, lights low, sleep. The order matters more than the exact clock time. Predictability is what does the work.

2. Make it visual

Many autistic children find a visual schedule reassuring — simple pictures or a short checklist showing what comes next. Being able to see the steps removes uncertainty and gives your child a sense of control over the wind-down.

3. Lower the stimulation as you go

Dim the lights, lower your voice, slow your movements. Turn off screens well before bed. Each step should feel a little quieter and calmer than the last, so the environment itself signals that the day is ending.

4. End with the same calm story

A familiar, gentle story is a natural final step — and if your child likes the same story every night, that's ideal, not a problem. (Here's why sameness helps at bedtime.) Choose stories with literal language, no scary or surprising moments, and a reassuring ending: the character safe in bed, calm and loved.

5. Protect the routine, gently

Try to keep the routine consistent even when life gets busy — the nights it's hardest to keep are often the nights it helps most. And prepare for known disruptions (travel, visitors, a change of plan) ahead of time; a short social story about what's coming can make an unfamiliar evening feel more predictable.

How Bushbaby fits the routine

Bushbaby is built to be the calm, predictable story at the end of the routine. Its Calm Support mode uses the same five-part structure every night with literal language and no surprises, you can lock a story so it's identical each time, and the app reads every word aloud so the wind-down stays gentle and hands-free. There's also a social story builder for the harder days.
